Special Screening - Thunderstreak

26 April, 2024

Isle of Wight documentary film-maker Ben Wood is pleased to be showing his latest film "Thunderstreak: Wreck to Racer" at the Ventnor Arts Club on Friday 26th April. The 60 minute sports documentary made in 2023 tells the compelling story of the iconic powerboat Thunderstreak, originally commissioned and owned by Tommy Sopwith in the 1960's to compete in the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race organised by Sir Max Aitken. The story unfolds with interviews from contemporaries of Tommy Sopwith's including Keith Dallas, Mike Mantle and his navigator Charles de Selincourt. Interspersed with archive photography and newsreel from the early races the film then charts Thunderstreak's tragic demise until her current owner Hugo Peel took her on undertaking a complete restoration before returning her to a hugely successful racing campaign culminating in back to back UK National Championships in 2022 and 2023. Interviews with her current owner, crew and team give a fascinating insight into this high octane sport with footage from recent races in the Solent including the most recent Cowes - Torquay - Cowes races. Filmed and edited exclusively on the Isle of Wight by Ben Wood and his team from Island Images this screening at the Ventnor Arts Club is only the third time the film has been screened since it's premiere at the Royal Yacht Squadron in February 2024.
