Ventnor Film Society Screening - The Blue Trail

In this dystopian drama, a near-future Brazilian government forces the elderly into harsh retirement colonies. When 77-year-old Tereza receives her relocation order, she refuses to surrender her independence. She defiantly escapes on a riverboat into the Amazon on a quest to take her first ever aeroplane ride. Her tale unfolds as a poignant voyage of magic realism along surreal waterways, where reality and wonder blur, entirely on her own terms.
Gabriel Mascaro’s The Blue Trail cleverly trades dreary dystopian tropes for pure charm and tropical spirit. Winning the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at Berlin, it delivers an uplifting, sun-drenched road trip through the Amazon that leans into quirky humour, gorgeous visuals, and an irrepressible sense of defiance rather than doom. Anchored by a magnetic lead performance alongside Rodrigo Santoro, it’s a breezy, beautifully shot delight that celebrates vitality and freedom.
