In 1944, the remote mountain village of Vermiglio serves as a refuge from World War II.  When Pietro, a deserting Sicilian soldier, arrives, he finds sanctuary with the local schoolmaster's large family.  His marriage to the eldest daughter, Lucia, initially offers hope and new life.  However, as peace returns to Italy, a devastating revelation about Pietro's past surfaces, irrevocably altering the family's future and their bond with the land.
