Club Screening - Licorice PizzaClub Screening - Licorice Pizza – ![]() “You’re a very powerful feeling,” one character tells another towards the end of Licorice Pizza. It’s a moment which feels like the film is describing itself. Paul Thomas Anderson’s ninth film is shaggy and shambolic but utterly lovable, equally as interested in mood and flavour as story and narrative. It’s a coming-of-age tale sketched with the kind of nostalgia that manifests as memories often do: messy and seemingly unformed, yet somehow deeply, ineffably profound, down to your bones. Seemingly combining Anderson’s early, more freewheeling comedic approach (Boogie Nights, Magnolia) with his later, more formally ambitious efforts (Inherent Vice, Phantom Thread), it’s a thrilling culmination of his talents, a film he could have only made at this point in his ludicrously virtuoso career. If it bears any resemblance to another PTA joint, it would be Punch-Drunk Love; for Licorice Pizza is essentially an unconventional romantic comedy, starring two eccentric-outsider leads, of the kind who would have once seemed unthinkable as romantic-comedy leads. 1973, San Fernando Valley, California. While waiting to get his high-school photo taken, 15-year-old budding actor Gary Valentine (Hoffman) asks 25-year-old photographer’s assistant Alana Kane (Haim) on a date — sparking a fiery friendship, business partnership, and possible romance. Special Screening - Eric Ravilious: Drawn to WarSpecial Screening - Eric Ravilious: Drawn to War – ![]() This Margy Kinmonth film, is a true story. One of Britain’s greatest landscape artists, Eric Ravilious, is killed in a plane crash while on commission as Official War Artist in Iceland in 1942. His life is as compelling and enigmatic as his art, set against the dramatic wartime locations that inspire him. This film brings to life this unique and still grossly undervalued British artist caught in the crossfire of war 80 years ago, whose legacy largely sank without trace, until now… This is the first full length feature documentary about Eric Ravilious, told in his own words through previously unseen private correspondence, made with the blessing of the Ravilious estate. Shot entirely on location in UK, Portugal and Ireland, the film asks what it is to be a war artist, featuring Ai Weiwei, Alan Bennett, Grayson Perry, Robert Macfarlane and many more, to be released in his 80th anniversary year. This is the first full length feature documentary about Eric Ravilious, told in his own words through previously unseen private correspondence, made with the blessing of the Ravilious estate. Club Screening - Paris, 13th DistrictClub Screening - Paris, 13th District – ![]() Acclaimed filmmaker Jacques Audiard eschews romantic screen representations of Paris for a more grounded take on contemporary love and life in the city, unearthing a kind of cinematic poetry with which to explore these themes. Set in the French capital’s 13th arrondissement, on the left bank of the Seine, the film charts the interwoven relationships between four twenty-somethings, played by Lucie Zhang, Makita Samba, Savages lead singer Jehnny Beth and Noémie Merlant. Debbie Bond, Blueswoman. LiveDebbie Bond, Blueswoman. Live – We are very excited to welcome Debbie back to the club after two consecutive years when it just wasn't possible for her to make the trip from the USA. So there is a lot to celebrate. American Singer, guitar player and songwriter Debbie has been performing for decades in the Alabama backwoods and is now a regular on the Southern US and European club and festival circuit. Influenced by raw juke joint blues and the famed sounds of Muscle Shoals, Debbie's impressive story includes years of performing with traditional Alabama blues musicians, like Johnny Shines, Eddie Kirkland, Willie King, Shar Baby, Little Jimmy Reed and more. Immersion in Alabama roots music has deeply flavoured her guitar playing, soulful voice and original song writing, giving her a contemporary and original sound, with soul, blues, and jazz influences. Debbie's collaboration with British born keyboard/harmonica player “Radiator” Rick has added a swampy New Orleans edge to her sound. Don't miss what will be a great night of blues and stuff.
